The Annual Royal College Hostel Health Screening Programme – 2012 epitomises one heart and mind for the well-being of young Royalists The Royal College Doctors Association (RCDA) who took time off their professional schedules and lent their time and expertise on May Day, May 1st 2012, at the annual Health Screening Programme for the benefit of the hostellers. Eighty RCDA members provided their voluntary services at this event, to ensure that it was a success. This programme was aimed at promoting the health and well-being of the hostellers who stay far away from their homes and parents and care-givers, and a programme such as this one ensures that these students under hostel-care are able to meet the demands of the competitive academic and sporting curricula at Royal College. The hostel itself is a showpiece of a well-planned and ergonomic layout, designed in Blue and Gold themes, which creates an atmosphere of being a ‘home-away-from-home’, which include excellent dining and other recreational facilities. Not only the students of Royal College, who comprised over 200 students, the hostel staff were also screened for illnesses by a team of doctors from RCDA and the relevant medication dispensed. Specialists Doctors in General Medicine, Surgery, ENT, Paediatrics, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Orthopaedics Surgery, Cardiology, and Chest Medicine were present for specialized consultations. Specialised treatment such as ultrasound scanning by a team of specialist Radiologists was offered for those students who required extra attention to their health. The RCDA also conducted eye and dental clinics where extensive screening and treatment was offered. For those students who have been identified to have chronic illnesses, referral letters issued to specialized clinics for further investigations and follow-ups. The Principal of Royal College, Mr. Upali Gunasekara, The Secretary of the Royal College Union, Mr. Manju Ariyaratne, the Hostel Warden, Mr. Aruna De Silva, the President of RCDA, Dr. Ajith Tennakoon, and Dr. Pramil Liyanage, Hon Secretary RCDA, were present at this health programme. |
